COVID-19

March 19, 2020

These are difficult times.

Just as the global economy was entering its biggest crisis since the 2007-08 Global Financial Crisis, a coronavirus pandemic is now sweeping the world.

Everywhere, there is a deep sense of fear and insecurity. These feelings have been fuelled by years of neoliberal austerity that have weakened already inadequate health systems and cut back workers' basic rights.

It is not just public health that is under threat but people's basic livelihoods. Many are wondering if they will be able to pay their rent and bills, whether or not they get infected with COVID-19.

Federal and state governments have shown they are more concerned with propping up businesses than dealing with the public health crisis. But the corporate rich will be able to look after themselves.

The rest of us, left to fend with inadequate public services and contradictory information, are being instructed to deal with the pandemic by washing our hands and “social distancing” measures such as avoiding crowds, steering 1.5 metres away from others and not shaking hands.

While such measures are important, what we need more than ever to get through this crisis is “social solidarity”.

Without solidarity, fear and despair will take hold. And in such a scenario, governments will undoubtedly turn to authoritarian measures, as some have already begun to.

This is where Green Left has an important role to play.

Over the next few months, there will be a serious need for strong voices speaking out in favour of social solidarity. That is why, despite the difficulties ahead, Green Left is committed to continuing to publish a hardcopy edition.

If circumstances demand it, we may only come out in digital form for a while. But one way or another we will get the truth out, build solidarity and promote the system change the world clearly needs.

However, we need your help to do this.

Our distribution and fundraising plans will be severely disrupted by the pandemic, so we will need a war chest to get through.

That is why we are making a special appeal to those who have the means to make a special donation to the Green Left Fighting Fund. Every dollar counts.

Another way you can help is by becoming a Green Left supporter. If you are already a supporter, then get a friend or family member to become one too.

Your solidarity will keep Green Left going.

While 'social distancing' measures are important, what we need more than ever to get through this crisis is 'social solidarity.
