JOHANNESBURG - Play-based learning could be a game-changer in our education system.

It's had an impact on more than a 150,000 Jordanian children.

Now in a first of its kind for the continent, the Africa Play Conference is taking place in South Africa.

The conference aims to promote quality early-childhood learning.

Education ministers from across the continent are expected to attend the event, which runs from the 25-27 February.

LEGO Foundation Director Kerry Kassen and UNICEF's Sanjay Wijesekera explained the benefits of play-based learning and incorporating a play-based approach to teaching in South Africa.

Wijesekera stated that play-based learning is still a field being studied but research has shown it physically builds executive functions of intelligence, social skills, and the emotional development of the child.
