Best new and returning summer TV shows

about 6 years in NY Daily

Summer means the beach and ice cream and, yes, staying inside to watch TV in the air conditioning.

While most shows wrapped in May, the season still provides a few gems every year.

“Pose”

As if he weren’t busy enough already, Ryan Murphy brings a new show to FX: “Pose,” a look at 1980s New York City and the underground ball culture.

Stars Kate Mara, Evan Peters, James Van Der Beek, Billy Porter and largest-ever cast of transgender actors in series regular roles. Premieres June 3 on FX.

“Dietland”

Julianna Margulies returns to TV after “The Good Wife” as the devilish Kitty Montgomery, editor-in-chief of Daisy Chain magazine, who finds herself in the middle of a revolution in which accused rapists are being murdered and dropped out of airplanes by a shadow group called “Jennifer.”

Stars Julianna Margulies, Joy Nash, Robin Weigert, Tamara Tunie, Erin Darke. Premieres June 4 on AMC.

“Cloak & Dagger”

If “Infinity War” wasn’t enough, Marvel will always be here for you, this time with two new superheroes: Tyrone Johnson, who can engulf people in darkness and fear, and Tandy Bowen, who controls pure light.

Stars Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph. Premieres June 7 on Freeform.

“Sense8”

The cult-favorite sci-fi drama was unceremoniously canceled in June 2017 after two seasons, but fans wouldn’t let it go. Instead, the showrunners negotiated a two-hour season finale to wrap up the fates of its diverse cast.

Stars Toby Onwumere, Tina Desai, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Jamie Clayton, Tuppence Middleton, Doona Bae, Brian J. Smith and Max Riemelt. Airs June 8 on Netflix.

“The Bold Type”

One of the easily missed shows of last summer returns with its three feminist ladies in tow, along with their personal and professional baggage. But rarely the two shall mix in a refreshing drama that lets young women care about more than boys and clothes.

Stars Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee and Meghann Fahy. Returns June 12 on Freeform.

“Luke Cage”

When one villain dies, another one rises to fill his place. This time, Harlem’s Hero for Hire finds a new hoodie and a new Jamaican foe — plus the return of Mariah Dillard.

Stars Mike Colter, Alfre Woodard, Theo Rossi and Mustafa Shakir. Returns June 22 on Netflix.

“The Great British Bake Off”

England’s most delightful reality show is finally airing Season 3 this summer with the original cast: judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood and commentators Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc.

Returns June 22 on PBS.

“GLOW”

The wildly fun Netflix series earned rave reviews last season and follows up as the group of misfits begins shooting their own series, “The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.”

Stars Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin and Marc Maron. Returns June 29 on Netflix.

“Castle Rock”

Stephen King and J.J. Abrams drew an all-star cast for their 10-episode horror anthology series about the strange goings-on in Castle Rock, Maine.

Stars Terry O'Quinn, André Holland, Sissy Spacek, Melanie Lynskey and Bill Skarsgård. Premieres July 25 on Hulu.

“Jack Ryan”

Chris Pine didn’t have much luck as Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan in the 2014 “Shadow Recruit” movie, so now it’s John Krasinski’s turn. Jack Ryan’s first small screen adventure will take him to Europe and the Middle East to track down a terrorist.

Stars John Krasinski, Abbie Cornish and Wendell Pierce. Premieres August 31 on Hulu.
