Black Flag logo artist cuffed for violating restraining order

The artist who created the iconic Black Flag band logo has been arrested for violating a restraining order against his wife in the midst of a contentious divorce.

Raymond Ginn, who reportedly played bass in an early lineup of the punk band founded by his brother Greg, was in court Tuesday to face a criminal contempt charge in connection to his alleged contact with artist Aida Ruilova, with whom he has a child.

Ginn, 60, known professionally as Raymond Pettibon, famously designed the widely recognized and often-tattooed four black bars associated with the California-based band, founded in the 1970s and formerly fronted by Henry Rollins.

The lower Manhattan resident was arrested Jan. 29 and released on his own recognizance.

In emails, he “made statements and comments regarding Ms. Ruilova’s sexuality” and the missives “included derogatory and vulgar statements” about her, according to a criminal complaint.

It was not immediately clear why the order was issued in the first place.

Ginn was annoyed to see a press presence at his court appearance but mused to a photographer that a courtroom sketch would be more appropriate.

“Any time something’s in the news it drags out,” he loudly complained to his lawyer in the elevator after his brief cameo before a judge.

As he left the building, his agitation heightened.

“Slow news day?” he asked a reporter.

He’s due back in court on April 4.
