A SERVICE of Thanksgiving for George Moore, Swilly View, Ballymaleel, Letterkenny, took place in Conwal Parish Church on Tuesday afternoon.
George, who was very well known and a much loved neighbour and friend to many, died peacefully on Sunday in Letterkenny University Hospital.
Although he was retired for a number of years, many will remember George working as a lorry driver, employed with Donegal Oil, Oatfield Sweets and Donegal Creameries.
His son Laurence delivered a beautiful eulogy in which he celebrated his father’s life at Tuesday’s Service of Thanksgiving.
He said his father was born on March 18, 1934 in Ray Schoolhouse to Charles and Mary Jane Moore.
He was the sixth born in a family of eight and is predeceased by brothers, Jim, Edwin, Hector, Laurence, baby sister, Ida and Auntie Ena.
“George did not have to go to school,” Laurence said.
“All he had to do was just jump out of bed, go down the stairs and run up the corridor to the schoolroom as his mother was the schoolteacher. Rumour has it, he was always late for class.”
When George’s mother retired due to ill health, the Moore family moved from Ray School to Lurgybrack in Letterkenny, where George’s youngest brother, Ernie, still lives.
Laurence told how George’s first job was in Moffit’s drapery shop in Raphoe and he would cycle from Ray school to Moffitt’s every day.
“During the 1950s a lot of young men had a desire to drive a lorry, and George was no different,” Laurence said.
“When his father retired, George took over his job working in Donegal Oil Company delivering oil. He then moved to Oatfield delivering sweets countrywide. His next job was collecting milk for Donegal Creameries.
“George drove the milk lorry around Inishowen for many years, working seven days a week.”
George, Laurence added, had many good memories from his work. He made many friends down through the years. He was a kind and gentle soul, and was always willing to lend a hand whenever he could. His soft voice never spoke ill about anyone.
During his retirement, George’s hobby was, along with his wife, visiting family, neighbours and his wide circle of friends, catching up on all that was going on.
He had a keen interest in sport, including horse racing, motorsport and more recently Gaelic football, particularly the Donegal team.
He had an impact on all of his family and friends’ lives and they will miss him greatly.
Interment took place after Tuesday’s service to Gortlee Cemetery, Letterkenny.
George is survived by his loving wife, Eileen, sons, Derek (Hilary), Laurence (Nuala) and Raymond (Colleen), daughter, Audrey Gamble (Donald), brother, Ernie, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and a wide circle of family, friends and neighbours.
