Having lost two brothers to murders over the past few years, a “desperate” 31-year-old man from Cumuto bought an illegal gun to protect himself and his family, including an adult female relative who was recently shot at.
The man, Jumol Cox, was fined $75,000 after he pleaded guilty on August 19 to having a pistol and 13 rounds of ammunition.
He appeared before master Margaret Sookraj-Goswami in the North Criminal High Court.
She fined him $50,000 for the gun and $25,000 for the ammunition.
Cox, who is a farmer, has four months to pay or, in default, will serve one year with hard labour in prison.
The police held him with the loaded gun at Cumuto Main Road over the weekend.
PC Boodoo laid the charges and legal officer Cpl Irwin Joseph prosecuted.
Cox was represented by attorneys Jerry Boyer and Terry Boyer.
The attorneys told the court two of Cox's brothers had been murdered and a female relative was shot at. She escaped unhurt.
From what the attorneys were told, Cox had been receiving death threats, and bought the gun to protect himself and his family, including two minors, as he was desperate.
In December 2021, his brother Roger Cox, 31, was gunned down near the Cumuto Junction while on his way to visit a friend. Roger Cox, a construction worker was taken to the Arima Health Facility, where he was declared dead about two hours later.
In February 2023, another brother, Junior Cox, 35, got into a fight with a group of people in Cumuto and was beaten to death.
