UNC mourns Dr Emanuel Hosein

THE UNC extended its condolences to the family of Dr Emanuel Hosein on his passing, in a statement on August 6. Hosein, 75, died on August 5.
Hosein was an executive member of the United Labour Front (ULF) from 1976, a predecessor party of the UNC, serving as MP for Naparima (1981-1986).
Later he was MP for Tunapuna and Minister of Health in the NAR Government, formed by the alliance of the ULF, DAC, ONR, and Tapia.
As a ULF executive member, Hosein helped to shape the NAR.
"Dr Hosein played a vital role in the Parliament during the 1990 attempted coup, attending to wounded persons, including the late MP Leo Des Vignes and Prime Minister ANR Robinson.
"For his brave and professional conduct during the ordeal, he was called a hero by his colleagues in the Commission of Enquiry into the 1990 Coup."
As a person who battled polio since childhood, he fought for the rights of the disabled, and was a founding member of the Trinidad and Tobago Chapter of Disabled People International, which is still active today, and had dynamic subsequent leaders, including the late George Daniel.
"Dr Hosein also served on the Equal Opportunities Commission, established by the UNC to deal with discrimination, including discrimination on the basis of disability."
For his many years of advocacy work, he received a Chaconia Medal Gold in 2022.
"Dr Hosein was a man of integrity, a man of the people, with a burning sense of justice and passion for the politics of change.
"While humble and modest, he was also determined and courageous."
Hosein was a model to follow, which the country's young people should learn from.
"We in the United National Congress salute Dr Hosein and honour his life and memory. We pray that God will grant his wife and children the strength needed in this difficult time."
