Transgender Catholics say new Vatican document shows no understanding of their lives

22 days in Denver Post

Transgender Catholics are voicing disappointment with a new Vatican document rejecting the fundamental concept of changing one’s biological sex. In essence, it’s a restatement of longstanding Catholic teaching. But the dismay was heightened because recent moves by Pope Francis had encouraged some trans Catholics to hope the church might become more accepting. Maxwell Kuzma, a Catholic transgender man from Ohio, said he was grateful for the pope’s personal outreach. But Kuzma said the new document fails to reflect comparable respect and support. A trans woman from New Jersey, Christine Zuba, said church leaders should reach out to trans Catholics and hear their stories. and then consider a new approach.
