(CN) - Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announced his unexpected resignation Wednesday, citing "personal and political reasons" for cutting his term in office short.

Varadkar, who began his second stint as the taoiseach - a position equivalent to prime minister - in December 2022, said in an impromptu news conference that he was not the "best person for the job anymore," while also resigning as leader
