I can’t remember the last time I got so demoralised watching television. I’m talking about Channel 4’s The Jury: Murder Trial, a four-part reality TV social experiment that aired over the week. A real-life anonymised trial restaged in a former Chelmsford courthouse, with verdicts delivered by two juries of real people. Experts provide insights, while actors play barristers, the accused and witnesses. The juries, who sit in closed-off court boxes, are aware they’re being filmed, but not that there’s an alternative jury. For the first time, there’s access to jury debates.
