Worker Killed in Brooklyn Building Collapse, FDNY Says

At least one person was killed when a building being illegally renovated partially collapsed in Brooklyn, New York, on Friday, February 2, city officials said. The collapse happened at 1266 50th Street in the Borough Park neighborhood of south Brooklyn at around 12:10 pm, according to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). FDNY Assistant Chief Joseph Ferrante told press that three people were working in the basement when the collapse happened, and one of them was left pinned under debris. “The first floor had collapsed into the cellar area in a V-shape collapse,” Ferrante said. “Units began to shore up the floor, and as we had it shored up, units were able to dig out the dirt from underneath the victim and removed him. Rescue medics were on scene by then with one of our FDNY physicians, and unfortunately, we had to pronounce one of the workers dead at the scene.” Jimmy Oddo, the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Buildings, said no work had been permitted and a “Stop Work” order had been issued at the site in early January after receiving complaints. “The only work that should have been done at this site is to make the site safe, and as you can see that Stop Work order was violated,” Oddo said. “There are absolutely no plans submitted to the Department of Buildings, so this fatality absolutely should not have happened. They should not have been doing this work, let alone having a Bobcat inside this structure,” he added. Oddo declined to comment on possible criminal charges, but said the building’s owners could be facing more than $100,000 in fines. Credit: FDNY via Storyful
