Florida Gov Ron DeSantis struck a defiant tone as he addressed supporters in West Des Moines, after trailing a distant second to Donald Trump in the Republican Party Iowa caucus. “They threw everything but the kitchen sink at us. They spent almost $50 million attacking us. No one’s faced that much … just through Iowa,” DeSantis said, also hitting out at “the media” for projecting a Trump victory before some “people even got a chance to vote.” He continued: “Because of your support, in spite of all that, that they threw at us, everyone against us, we’ve got our ticket punched out of Iowa!” “I’m not going to make any excuses … I will not let you down,” DeSantis concluded, after promising to “reverse the decline” in the US and to protect the “sacred fire of liberty”. DeSantis finished 30 points behind Trump in Iowa, narrowly ahead of Nikki Haley in third place. The entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, placed fourth, dropped out of the race, and endorsed Trump.
