A celebration of ‘mediocrity’ Piers Morgan on Mary Earps winning BBC SPOTY award

Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan reacts to England goalkeeper Mary Earps winning the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year.

Mr Morgan questioned why the Lioness player won the award over sporting stars Frankie Dettori, Rory McIlroy Stuart Broad & Ronnie O’Sullivan.

“Mary Earps this year won nothing,” he said.

"It looks to me that terrible scourge of virtue-signalling box-ticking has crept into this once great award.

“It's become the national equivalent of a participation medal, didn’t they all do well, losing doesn’t matter, winning would have been a problem.

“This is what we’ve got isn’t, we're a society that now celebrates mediocrity over winning."
