Dutton calls on PM to intervene following the cancellation of a London Australia Day event

about 2 years in news

Opposition leader Peter Dutton has called on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to intervene after Australia’s High Commissioner to the UK cancelled an annual Australia Day Gala Dinner in London.

Stephen Smith has prevented the event from going ahead due to sensitivities around celebrating on the national day.

The black-tie event honours Australians and British people who contribute to the two nations’ bilateral relationship.

“The Prime Minister should direct his hand-picked High Commissioner to reverse this bad decision,” Mr Dutton said on social media.

“Australia Day is our national day, and it shouldn’t be cancelled like this.”
