The childhood home of former civil rights leader Martin Luther King Junior has suffered a close call after it was saved from an alleged arson attack.

Bystanders stopped a woman from burning down the historic building in Atlanta, where Dr King spent the first 12 years of his life.

Officials say their actions saved what is still an important piece of American history.

The alleged arsonist was challenged as she was caught on film dousing the front of the house with contents from a petrol can.

Investigators from the local fire service say no damage was done and a clean-up operation has commenced.
