French far right seizes on teen’s killing to ‘push ideas of inter community violence’

about 2 years in news

The French government urged calm Monday after the killing of a teenage boy at a village dance party earlier this month was followed up with violent demonstrations by the extreme right. "The far right appears to have drummed up some sort of militia from across France (...) to push ideas of inter-community violence," says Andrew Smith, a lecturer in liberal arts and France expert at Queen Mary University in London. "The kind of language being deployed on the streets by masked figures (in the far-right protests), this sounds like the language of the 1930s, it sounds like the language of identitarian violence."
