‘Chaos’ Scalise drops out of US House Speaker race

University of Sydney Political Scientist Professor Simon Jackman has discussed Steve Scalise dropping out of the US House Speaker race describing the situation as “chaos”.
Mr Jackman said it looks like Republicans will have to replace Steve Scalise with Jim Jordan, who narrowly lost the nomination to Scalise.
“The issue you’ve got here is a group on the far right of the Republican course who are absolutely digging in refusing to compromise on the ability to get things to the floor of the house,” he told Sky News Australia.
“And as they did with speaker McCarthy, they want them groomed trigger strategy and that is if you deviate from these commitments you're making to us now we reserve the right to call a spill just as we did with McCarthy.
“I think if you’re looking at taking on that job of being the leader of that group that's just not tenable.”
