‘Full marks for Albanese’s noble intentions’ but ‘reconciliation will go backwards’ Fr Brennan

Jesuit Priest and Human Rights Lawyer Father Frank Brennan says Aboriginal Australians should not have to suffer for the mistakes of the Albanese government if a Voice referendum gets voted down.

When asked what the fallout of a No vote would be, Fr Brennan told Sky News host Chris Kenny “reconciliation will go backwards” and “race relations will go backwards”.

“I give the Prime Minister full marks for his noble intentions but I do think there were a few strategic errors,” Fr Brennan said.

“If the errors hadn’t been made, we’d be in a much better position in terms of unifying the country and I think we also would have been much closer to Yes.

“I am not a natural optimist … I think its prospects of getting up are fairly slight.”
