Trotters TT has invested $42,000 into the national Under-17 cricket team for the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars U17 Championship 50 Overs and Two-Day campaign, which bowls off with the shorter format at three venues on Saturday.
TT open their campaign against the Windward Islands at the National Cricket Centre in Couva from 9am. The other two matches see Barbados meet Guyana at Gilbert Park, Point Lisas, and Jamaica up against the Leeward Islands at Inshan Ali Park, Preysal.
The five-round, 50-over tournament concludes on August 20. A coaching workshop will be held on the following day, the regional teams hold training sessions on August 21, before the three-round, two-day competition kicks off on August 22.
Former Red Force fast bowler Rayad Emrit is TT’s coach and Fareez Ali, captain.
During his short address, Emrit thanked Trotters group director Matthew Sabga, group general manager Cleon Greene and Peter Matthews for helping the team acquire the necessary equipment for the U17 tourney.
“My team and I decided to assist in bridging the gap to provide some of the world’s best equipment for the U17 team. This was just a dream, that became a thought, a now a reality thanks to the kind generosity of Mr Sabga, Mr Greene and special mention to Peter Matthews,” Emrit said.
TT Cricket Board (TTCB) treasurer Kiswah Chaitoo was on hand to receive the cheque from Sabga and thanked Trotters for their timely investment into the nation’s youth.
“We expect to have a good showing from the youngsters as I know Mr Emrit has been doing a lot of work with them over the past few weeks. I only ask that the players, coach, managers and support staff go out there and give it their best.
“Enjoy the game and make your country, sponsor, community, parents and supporters proud. Thanks to Trotters for making an investment in nation-building by sponsoring gear for the cricket team,” Chaitoo said.
Additionally, Sabga told the young team that it was “critical” that the U17 team have all the tools and resources available to them to perform at the highest levels of competition.
Sabga said he heard of the challenges the team faced to attain proper equipment ahead of both competitions and stepped in.
“When one of the most ardent and loyal supporters of both national and regional cricket Peter Matthews, a close friend of my father, Trotters Group founder John Sabga, contacted me about the team’s plight ahead of the upcoming tournament.
“I immediately reached out to key executive team members, spoke to them about how we could assist and put this sponsorship together on such very short notice. We take immense pride and privilege in being able to sponsor our national youth cricketers, and ensuring continuity, growth and a return to greatness of both our local and regional cricket fans,” he said.
Also attending the event was TTCB executive member and U17 team manager Stephen Ramkissoon and the U17 team.
