Citizens responding to Kamla’s message

THE EDITOR: It is incredible how Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s stand your ground policy has been embraced across ethnic divides, income divides, political divides, and residential divides.
Contrary to Keith Rowley and the PNM’s negative spin, this is not about pitting any group against anybody else, but rather about allowing each and every innocent victim of crime to stand up for themselves and their families, and to provide legal support for that, rather than allowing citizens to remain as helpless sitting ducks and be abused and brutalised by a handful of criminals.
People who would not ordinarily vote for the UNC, or who ordinarily might not vote in local government elections at all, have now come out and enthusiastically given their support to the UNC because of the stand your ground policy and Persad-Bissessar’s brave and unswerving stance in solidarity with the victims of crime.
Business people in the West who never bothered to vote in local government elections before have now said they are coming out to vote for the UNC. Young people of all races along the east-west corridor have been excited by the fact that Persad-Bissessar has used language that they completely understand and identify with. They have been embracing her and the UNC with absolute enthusiasm, as shown on social media videos, shorts, reels and Tik Toks, on a daily basis.
Stand your ground is a policy which can unite us across all divides and provide a bedrock foundation for turning the crime situation around in this country, once and for all.
It has galvanised the country and provoked serious policy debate involving the whole society, not just a privileged elite.
We thank Persad-Bissessar for bravely standing her ground, and for supporting us in standing ours.
