PM Trust begins with procurement law

about 2 years in TT News day

THE Prime Minister said trust in the ability of public officers to properly execute procurement legislation must begin with the passage of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Property (Amendment and Validation) Bill, 2023.
Dr Rowley made this comment during debate on the bill in the House on Wednesday.
The House passed the bill with amendments by a vote of 22-16.
The bill was passed with further amendments by the Senate on Friday around 3 am.
The Senate voted 19-nine to pass the amended bill.
The House is expected to sit next week to approve the Senate's amendments to the bill.
Rowley said there were public servants who were unwilling to become public procurement officers in their respective government departments because they had no idea how the new law worked.
He added this was not helped by the Opposition UNC and some elements in the media misrepresenting that the amendments to the law involved.
Rowley said there is one Caricom country where there are procurement issues because of misunderstandings that their public officers have about procurement law there.
"We in TT are on that track."
Government MPs thumped their desks as Rowley said, "We have to trust somebody in this country."
