The federal government is talking tough on the stalled free trade deal with the European Union.

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt says a deal is still likely despite Trade Minister Don Farrell admitting there was "a long way to go".

Mr Watt said Australia won’t be doing a deal "just for the sake of it".
