Brooklyn parolee's truck crash possibly caused by stress brother

A Brooklyn parolee suspected of crashing a rental box truck into seven cars in Hell's Kitchen before trying to steal a fire truck was on the straight and narrow before he veered off course, his brother told the Daily News on Monday.

Convicted felon Devon Brandon, 36, was in the midst of personal stress that might've contributed to the accident that seriously injured four people Sunday afternoon, his brother said.

"He just had his first daughter, and he didn't get to see her," Sam Smalls said, citing differences between Brandon and the child's mother.

Brandon was behind the wheel of an Enterprise truck when he caused the 1:40 p.m. smashup on Tenth Ave. at W. 43rd St., cops said. In a bizarre twist, he then ditched the truck and jumped into the driver's side of an FDNY engine truck - with a firefighter still in the seat, officials said.

Smalls didn't deny that his brother sold guns in the past, but said he had put those days behind him and recently got a job working on a movie set.

"He's a good person," Smalls added. "A nice person. He was doing good."
