Humanitarian organization Turkish Red Crescent set up food and aid distribution points across regions hit by the earthquakes on Thursday, February 9, as the death toll continued to climb. Footage posted by the National Movement Party shows evacuees gathered at a sports hall in Battalgazi, a town in the province of Malatya. Local government said that at least 2,000 people were served lunch at the event. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the death toll has risen to 16,170, according to local news on February 9. Turkey’s disaster management agency, AFAD, said close to 25,000 search and rescue personnel were working in the aftermath of the quake.
