When Sigmund Freud coined the phrase “the narcissism of small differences”, back in 1917, I don’t suppose Scottish politics was at the forefront of his mind; but all the same, those five words perfectly sum up the state of relations between the two parties that, since the dawn of devolution in 1999, have been locked in an increasingly bitter battle for Scotland’s social-democratic soul.
