Powell highlights need to ‘corral’ inflationary expectations

The US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has highlighted the need to not only get on top of inflation but “corral” inflationary expectations, CommSec’s Tom Piotrowski says.

The central bank recently announced a sixth consecutive interest rate increase, raising the policy by 75 basis points.

“And that was one of the factors that just saw sellers get the edge and then that momentum built up,” Mr Piotrowski told Sky News Australia.

“Because it’s not just a question of what happened today, it’s what’s going to happen over the course of the next couple of meetings - in particular, there’s a lot of conversation about the potential for moderation in the size of the rate hikes.”
