BARBADOS Royals maintained their perfect start to the 2022 Hero Caribbean Premier League T20 tournament with their fifth straight victory, on Sunday.
Royals defeated Jamaica Tallawahs by eight wickets with one ball to spare at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia.
Royals lead the standings with ten points and will be aiming for another victory against Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) at the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair, on Tuesday, from 7 pm.
TKR have had a dismal start to the tournament with one win, two losses and one no result.
On Sunday, Tallawahs posted 156/8 in 20 overs against the Royals with captain Rovman Powell cracking 52 off 31 deliveries, an innings which included five fours and three sixes.
Raymon Reifer and Amir Jangoo contributed to the total, scoring 41 and 30 respectively.
Left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy showed his class for the Royals with 3/24 in four overs and fellow pacer Jason Holder took 2/24 in four overs.
In response, opener Quinton de Kock ended on 64 not out off 53 balls to steer Royals to 157/2 in 19.5 overs. The left-hander struck seven fours.
Corbin Bosch continued his prolific form with 56 off 49 balls (three fours, two sixes).
Bosch and de Kock combined to put on 117 for the second wicket.
Following the win, Royals captain David Miller said, “Obviously we started really well in the first game and I have spoken a lot about momentum in these kind of competitions and we seem to be doing the right things.”
Miller said it has been a collective effort.
“There are a lot of guys that are contributing at different stages of the game, so for me, I look at it as a good team performance throughout all the games. Obviously you need one or two guys to do really well in the game, but everyone to chip in where they need to…bowling attack has been really, really good and our batters have followed.”
Miller said the Royals are not thinking about the playoffs yet.
“To be honest, we are actually not. It helps – winning five out of five, (but) we don’t want to slip off the gas now. The guys are playing really well and we just need to keep that momentum going.”
Powell said he appreciated the fight of his Tallawahs team-mates despite the defeat.
He said, “It shows me that the guys have heart. The last two games we only scored 150, 160 and the way how the guys fought yesterday (Saturday) and today (Sunday) to carry it down to the last over against a very good batting team like Barbados, is really commendable.”
