Former prime minister Tony Abbott says these are “obviously ominous times”.

“They’re ominous in a way not seen for many, many, many decades,” Mr Abbott told Sky News Australia host Rowan Dean.

Mr Abbott was asked about the potential repercussions for the world as China ramps up a more hostile military presence in the Pacific.

“We can but hope that a Gorbachev-style figure might emerge inside the Beijing regime,” Mr Abbott said.

The former prime minister also discussed the recent death of the last leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, and the lasting effect he had.

“He did effectively reform communism out of existence – at least in the old Soviet Union,” Mr Abbott said.

“And for that, the whole world should be immensely grateful”.

“Let’s hope somewhere in the ranks of the Chinese politburo is lurking a new Gorbachev."
