James Webb Space Telescope shows ‘new parts of the universe in a new way’

NASA has released the first set of images taken by the James Webb Space Telescope, which has the capability to see deep into the galaxy.

ANU astrophysicist and cosmologist Dr Brad Tucker says the telescope shows “new parts of the universe” in a new way.

“It’s looking at the infrared light so this is colours beyond the optical – beyond what the Hubble Space Telescope can see,” he told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

Dr Tucker said the James Webb Space Telescope's primary mirror is also much larger than the Hubble – being 6.5 metres across compared to the Hubble’s 2.4 metre width.

“This is so much bigger, you’re zooming in on things you couldn’t see before,” he said.

“This is the truly exciting thing that when you see, kind of, those curved galaxies around in this image, these are actually galaxies behind that massive kind of cluster in the middle … and it’s been magnified.”
