THE NATIONAL Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) will host its Junior Championships on Saturday and Sunday at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet.
This event is usually held in June, along with the national juvenile and open champs, but owing to the rescheduling of CAPE and CSEC examinations this year, and in the best interest of the athletes sitting exams, the event was postponed to this weekend.
The NAAA also shifted the venue to Tobago in an effort to boost interest in the sport there and to allow residents, and possibly tourists, to come out and see the young athletes in action.
A statement issued by the local track and field association said that, “Tobago has produced several top athletes over the years – Melvin Nero, Josanne Lucas, Renny Quow, Semoy Hackett and Kelly-Ann Baptiste, are just a few.
“There are a few rising stars from the sister-isle that would have successfully competed at the 2022 Carifta Games in Jamaica. Among them are Lalinii Grant, Miguel Taylor and Alexxe Henry.
“The 2022 Carifta team did quite well, (earning) 23 medals (two gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze) and other members of the team will be in action.”
Apart from becoming a national junior champion, excellent performances at this level assist with attracting scholarships for tertiary study in the United States.
The event will also provide a final opportunity for athletes still seeking to attain the qualifying standard for the forthcoming World Athletics Under-20 Championships carded for August 2-7 in Cali, Colombia.
