Golf the latest to be affected by ‘sportwashing’

almost 2 years in news

Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan says “sportwashing” is a phenomenon professional athletes and tournaments should take more seriously.

“It’s when a cold-shouldered controversial country uses the prestige and popularity of sport to whitewash its ugly reputation,” he said.

Mr Morgan said the Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series is the most recent to do this as top stars are “being offered bottomless pits” of money to join and abandon the PGA Tour.

“That’s just business but to the critics it normalizes the Saudi regime which uses forced labour, bombs children in Yemen, and murders journalists,” he said.

“Is golf putting money before morals?”
