MARILYN Ames, the mother of TT-born Canadian golfer Stephen Ames, is hopeful the donation of equipment to golf clubs in TT will help unearth more talent in the sport.
St Andrews Golf Club, St Madeleine Golf Club, Millennium Lakes and Country Club, Chaguaramas Golf Club, Pointe-a-Pierre and Leewards Golf Club all received equipment from the Stephen Ames Foundation at St Andrews Golf Club in Moka, Maraval, on Wednesday.
The Stephen Ames Foundation was created in 2005 with the mission to provide funding to junior golf programmes in TT and Canada.
Stephen, who is one of the best TT golfers in history, now lives in Canada.
Marilyn, CEO of the foundation, said her son never forgets his roots and is always willing to help the TT junior golfers.
“We are a thoroughly happy that Stephen continues to support junior golf and I must say it is really very easy getting all the equipment that we need from Stephen because he is always readily willing to give back to the junior golf and especially TT,” Marilyn said.

Golf is an expensive sport and Marilyn said the foundation wants to help golfers in TT fulfil their potential.
“He (Stephen) does give to Canada, but Canada is in a better financial position than we here, so because of this we are able to get most of the equipment that we need to help the programme and I am sure that we will continue this for years to come…I hope the children are able to utilize the clubs and improve their games. I keep telling people I am looking for another Stephen Ames among our juniors.”
A few junior golfers attended the distribution ceremony including Chris Richards Jnr and Zico Correia.
President of the TT Golf Association (TTGA) Wayne Baptiste said Stephen has always contributed to the growth of the sport locally. “He has supported the development of junior golf in TT for the last 20 years. On behalf of the TTGA we want to give Stephen Ames and his foundation a round of applause.”
Baptiste wants the relationship between the TTGA and the Stephen Ames Foundation to continue.
“The TTGA will continue to partner with the Stephen Ames Foundation for the future of golf in TT and with the distribution of these lovely, expensive golf clubs we are sure to see an improvement in our development plan and progress in our Start New at Golf programme in TT.”
Vice-president of the TTGA Michael Charles said, “I am sure these pieces of equipment are going to provide good impetus for the development of golf in TT.”
Stephen’s father Michael also attended the ceremony.
