Sky News host Rita Panahi says there are "glaring" double standards after Tanya Plibersek likened Liberal MP Peter Dutton to Harry Potter arch-villain Voldemort.

"Then she also advised him to smile more," Ms Panahi said.

"Can you just imagine the unbridled outrage if Peter Dutton had told Tanya Plibersek, you know, you should smile more and I'm just going to have a critique of your appearance while I'm at it.

"The double standards are what are glaring to me."

Ms Panahi said Mr Dutton handled the situation well after he described the remarks as "unfortunate".

Ms Plibersek has apologised to Mr Dutton over the issue.
