Ireland beat hosts to reach first France Sevens final
over 3 years in The Irish Times
The Ireland men’s team made history in reaching the final of the France World Series Sevens at the Stade Ernest-Wallon with a brilliant 24-7 victory over the host nation France in the semi-final. They will face Sevens aristocrats Fiji in the final, which takes place at 5.26, Irish time. It is Ireland’s first ever final on the elite circuit.
It was a superb effort from James Topping’s squad with Ireland’s player of the year and leading try scorer on the circuit Terry Kennedy weighing in with a brace of tries. The St Mary’s man scored the first try of the match as the French responded with one from Nisie Huyard, but Mark Roche restored Ireland’s lead and converted his own try to give his side a 12-7 interval lead.
Kennedy’s second try two minutes after the restart and another from Andrew Smith, converted by Billy Dardis, wrapped up a stunning win.
Earlier the Ireland women’s team lost 40-7 against Series winners, Australia. Ireland briefly held a 7-5 lead in the first half through Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe’s fine solo effort converted by the excellent Lucy Mulhall, but the Aussies responded ruthlessly running in six tries and converting five of them.
Aiden McNulty’s side will face Fiji in the bronze medal match.
