Emmanuel Macron comfortably won a second term as France's president, beating his far-right opponent Marine Le Pen with a 58.5% share of the vote in Sunday's ballot. The 44 year-old centrist is the first French president to win re-election in 20 years. In front of jubilant supporters he pledged a new era, while also acknowledging a need to address the issues that allowed his firebrand populist opponent to claim more than 40% of the vote.
