Americans Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele followed up their sensational round of 59 on Thursday with a round 68 in foursomes to hold the clubhouse lead by two strokes at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans on the PGA Tour.
Schauffele and Cantlay, who won both foursome games together at the 2021 Ryder Cup, had four birdies on their round, with a single dropped shot at the 12th hole to post 17-under-par 127 after two rounds at TPC Louisiana.
They led by two from Cameron Tringale and Wyndham Clark on 15 under. Australian team Jason Day and Jason Scrivener, and Sam Burns and Billy Horschel were in the clubhouse at 14 under.
It was a tough day for the all-Irish team of Séamus Power and Graeme McDowell as they looked set to miss the cut on five under after a round of 74. Shane Lowry, playing with Ian Poulter, was battling to make the cut on seven under for the tournament, one over on the day after eight holes.
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is an alternating-round fourball and foursomes competition, the second round being foursomes, with each team playing the one ball, with players will rotating tee shots.
On the DP World Tour, Scott Jamieson will take a two-shot lead into the weekend at the 2022 ISPS Handa Championship in Spain after a brilliant 63 on day two at Infinitum’s Lakes Course.
The Scot started the day two shots off the lead at four under having managed to finish his first round on a weather-delayed opening day but he ended it at 11 under, leading the way from overnight leader Tapio Pulkkanen.
“It was another great day,” Jamison said. “Yesterday after five weeks off I was a little unsure about what I was going to get but it was a solid day and today was even better.”
Ireland’s Niall Kearney made the cut on the number at one under after rounds of 68 and 71. Cormac Sharvin and Jonathan Caldwell missed the cut on two over.
