Taoiseach to meet Ukrainian prime minister at Shannon Airport

Taoiseach Micheál Martin is due to meet Ukrainian prime minister Denys Shmyhal at Shannon Airport on Wednesday afternoon.
Mr Shymal’s visit follows the President of the European Council Charles Michel surprise visit to Kyiv earlier on Wednesday.
Mr Michel, the head of the European Council that groups the 27 EU member states, arrived in the Ukrainian capital as the latest European official to visit and demonstrate support on Wednesday.
In a tweet following the visit, Mr Michel said there must be justice for the war crimes committed by Russia before there can be peace: “In Borodyanka. Like Bucha and too many other towns in #Ukraine. History will not forget the war crimes that have been committed here. There can be no peace without justice.”
Earlier, Latvia said the EU was preparing new measures to prevent Russia evading sanctions.
Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion, Ireland has operated an “open-door policy” to Ukrainians fleeing the war.
Many refugees have been placed in hotels and Irish homes over the past two months but a large number of newcomers are due to be placed in emergency mass accommodation in Cork from this week as hotel accommodation is now near capacity.
About 1,000 Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion arrived into Ireland over the Easter weekend.
