Emmanuel Macron ‘a smidge ahead’ in French polls

about 3 years in news

Former Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says he thinks the polls show French President Emmanuel Macron is “a smidge” ahead amid the first round of France’s presidential election.

“You would expect Macron to win, but there is quite a reaction in France to a range of different things, in particular the rise in the cost of living,” Mr Downer told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

“Le Pen, instead of presenting herself to what middle-class French would see as kind of immigration racist, she’s presenting herself as a populist who will solve the rise in cost of living issue.”
