Russia has ‘more or less’ been cut off from the world economy

George Washington University’s Steven Hamilton says Russia has “more or less” been isolated from the world economy amid its invasion of Ukraine.

Mr Hamilton said sanctions imposed by countries and businesses have ground Russian production to a halt.

“We’re sort of strangling the Russian economy,” he told Sky News Australia.

“With every day the sanctions bite more and more, and the harder Ukraine fights, the longer they delay the movement of Russian troops, the harder the Russian economy is hit.”

Mr Hamilton said it’s “pretty clear” Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine, expecting his military forces to be “far more capable than it actually was”.
