United States President Joe Biden has reflected on the life of former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid at a state funeral in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Harry Reid was the pugnacious son of a Nevada hard-rock miner who rose from poverty to earn a reputation as a fierce partisan fighter during an era of political gridlock in Washington.

President Biden praised Mr Reid's stoic nature who "never shunned hard work or asked for special favours".

"Here's someone Mark Twain himself would've written about as a defining character in the American story had he known Harry," Mr Biden said in his eulogy.
