Prosecutors hail Maxwell guilty verdict, defence vow to appeal

Prosecutors speaking outside a Manhattan court have welcomed the guilty verdict against Jeffrey Epstein's former lover Ghislaine Maxwell – while the defence has confirmed it will appeal the decision.

It comes as Ghislaine Maxwell has been found guilty of luring young girls to be sexually abused by Epstein – who killed himself in 2019 in a Manhattan jail cell while awaiting trial on sex abuse charges of his own.

A New York jury this morning found the British socialite guilty on 5 counts for recruiting and grooming teenagers.

A sentencing date will be given at a later time.

US Attorney Damian Williams praised the victims who came forward, saying "the road to justice has been far too long".

Maxwell's lawyer Bobbi Sternheim said the decision will be appealed.

"Obviously we are disappointed with the verdict, we have already started working on the appeal and we are confident that she will be vindicated," she told reporters.
