‘Bureaucratic callousness’ towards grieving Victorian family revealed

Sky News host Cory Bernardi says the “bureaucratic callousness” of Victorian health authorities towards a grieving family has been revealed by documents obtained by The Australian under Freedom of Information laws.

Only ten mourners were allowed to attend the funeral of eight-year-old Cooper Onyett in May due to Melbourne's fourth lockdown.

Cooper had tragically drowned on a school camp the week before and although his mother Skye Meinen tried to obtain an exemption from Victorian health authorities – so family and friends could attend – it was denied.

On the day before the funeral Ms Meinen went on 3AW and pleaded for an exemption.

In the daily press conference shortly after the then-Acting Premier James Merlino told reporters the health team were looking into the case.

“That was around 11am but it wasn't until 12 hours later that the health department's so-called commander of enforcement and compliance, someone named Chris Webb, got in touch with Skye,” Mr Bernardi said.

Mr Bernardi discussed the issue with Ms Meinen’s local member, Victorian Liberal MP Roma Britnell.
