John McEnroe attacked Kooyong’s centre court as the worst grass court he had seen and unworthy of Grand Slam status. He also faced fines and a possible suspension after arguing with referee, Peter Bellinger. The Australian Open would move to Melbourne Park, and a different surface, in 1988.
