Artists’ association Aosdána has elected five new members, the organisation announced on Wednesday. This brings the total of members to 250.
The newly elected members are author Anne Enright, visual artists Amanda Coogan, Rachel Joynt and Diana Copperwhite and composer Linda Buckley.
Aosdána honours artists who have made an outstanding contribution to the creative arts in Ireland. Membership of Aosdána, which is by peer nomination and election, is limited to 250 artists, who have produced a distinguished body of work.
Literature
Living in Dublin, Anne Enright has written seven novels, including The Gathering and Actress, and won the Booker Prize in 2007. She was the inaugural Laureate for Irish Fiction (2015-2018), and is a professor of creative writing at UCD. Enright’s work has been translated into about 40 languages and she has been a keen advocate for Irish writing at home and abroad.
Visual art
Amanda Coogan is a critically acclaimed artist working across live art, performance, sculpture and installation. Her work is challenging, provocative and visually stimulating. As well as playful and challenging, her performances address struggle and psychological resilience.
Now living and working in the Blackstairs Mountains, Co Carlow, Rachel Joynt exhibits regularly at the Solomon Gallery and the RHA Annual. Many of her large sculptures are on display, such as Mothership in Dún Laoghaire and Noah’s Egg on UCD’s campus.
Diana Copperwhite is a visual artist who lives and works in Dublin. She works with large-scale wall installations and large canvases, with an interest in the human portrait. Copperwhite’s recent publication, Fake New World, was published to coincide with a wall drawing and exhibition at the RHA Gallery.
Music
Linda Buckley is an Irish composer based in Glasgow who has written extensively for orchestra and has a particular interest in merging her classical training with the worlds of post punk, folk and ambient electronica.
In the past year five members of Aosdána have died, including Felim Egan (visual art), Julia O Faoláin (literature), David Shaw-Smith (visual art), Seamus Deane (literature) and John Kinsella (music).
Aosdána was founded in 1981, categories of artists include architecture, choreography, music, literature and visual art.
