In praise of school libraries

almost 4 years in The Irish Times

Sir, – It is deeply heartening to read of the wonderful school library in Ballymun where chess clubs and creative writing take place (“School libraries move into the digital age”, October 26th).
It must be indeed a place of refuge of imagination and learning. School libraries have the power to be truly transformational, in both Deis and non-Deis schools.
Sweden has not just school libraries aplenty but specially-trained school librarians, we could learn a thing or two from their good example. We live in hope.
– Yours, etc,
MARIA O DONOVAN,
Co Cork.
