On the eve of Pope John Paul I’s funeral in October 1978 a small Ultra-Conservative Roman Catholic group said that it had filed a formal petition with the Vatican Courts of Justice to “open a judicial inquiry to ascertain the true causes” of the Pope’s death, 33 days after he had ascended to the papacy.
