The audience last night loved it. The Mirror and the Light, Hilary Mantel’s brilliant dramatisation of Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII’s fixer, is already galvanising the West End and bringing in audiences who fancy themselves as cerebral. It’s a play that makes it to middle class conversation and Radio 4 arts programmes, and has turned one of the worst bastards in English history into a sympathetic figure.
