Ireland named best in world for Covid resilience after ‘startling turnaround’
almost 4 years in The Irish Times
Ireland has been named as the best country to be in as the world lives with the pandemic, topping the Bloomberg Covid Resilience Ranking.
The news agency noted in its monthly ranking that Ireland had been “steadily climbing” from the start of the year when it had the worst outbreak in the world. It says Ireland pulled off a “startling turnaround” noting that vaccination rates are among the highest in the world. Ireland took the top position from Norway which dominated for three months.
“Even as the peak summer travel season unfolded alongside delta’s spread, Ireland and places like Spain, the Netherlands and Finland held down serious illness and deaths through pioneering moves to largely limit quarantine-free entry to immunised people,” Bloomberg says.
“Bestowing more domestic freedoms on the inoculated helped boost vaccination levels to some of the highest in the world—over 90 per cent of Ireland’s adult population has received two shots—while allowing social activity to resume safely.”
Bloomberg says its ranking is a “monthly snapshot of where the virus is being handled the most effectively with the least social and economic upheaval” . It compiles the rankings using 12 indicators from “ virus containment, the quality of healthcare, vaccination coverage, overall mortality and progress toward restarting travel and easing border curbs” in 53 economies.
The top ranked countries are Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Finland and Denmark.
The news was welcomed by HSE chief executive Paul Reid who tweeted: “There have been really tough times for everyone. But we have had a good, coherent & cohesive response overall to #COVID19 from the public & the health services. Good to see Ireland ranked now as No 1 in the World’s Covid Resiliance ranking,” he said.
Fine Gael Senator Regina Doherty said the accolade was “ thanks to our world class vaccination programme”.
“While the pandemic has been so difficult for so many people, together we pursued the right strategy and we are coming though the other side,” she sad.
