‘Enormous damage’ to French over submarine deal was ‘inevitable’ Labor

Deputy Labor Leader Richard Marles says the way the Morrison government has handled the French submarine deal was “inevitably going to cause enormous damage to a relationship that really matters to Australia”.

Tensions have flared between Australia and France after Australia announced an AUKUS partnership with the United States and the United Kingdom, which led to the cancellation of a $90 billion diesel-powered submarine deal with the French.

“Too often I feel we don’t value the relationship with France nearly enough, we don’t often think about it in these terms, but France is actually our nearest neighbour,” Mr Marles told Sky News Australia.

“What has played out here has done enormous damage to that relationship, and we really need to be hearing from the government about how they’re going to fix it.

“This government completely botched the program with France, I mean, it did; there’s no getting around that.”
