Ryder Cup Pádraig Harrington selects Shane Lowry as wildcard pick
almost 4 years in The Irish Times
Shane Lowry will make his Ryder Cup debut for Europe in the match against the United States at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin later this month after getting a wild card pick from captain Pádraig Harrrington.
Having narrowly failed to earn his place on the team through the qualifying system which concluded after the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, Lowry only had to wait a couple of hours to hear he would be on the plane.
Lowry, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter got the three captain’s picks, with Harrington claiming of his fellow Irishman: “Shane’s a big time player, it was an easy pick for me based on his form . . . nobody thinks of him as a rookie.”
Harrington of Lowry, the 2019 British Open champion, added: “He’s well-suited to a team environment, lot of players have been looking to play alongside him.”
Lowry himself said making the Ryder Cup has been his number one goal for the past two years: "I'm so happy. It's been a stressful few weeks and a stressful few hours.
"This is going to be a very special week in my career and I just hope I can go there and win some points for Europe. I don't want to just go and make up the numbers."
